Another sneak peek at my novel coming 7/15!
Clara is looking at Sophie with this sad sort of understanding and all Sophie wants to do suddenly, can see with perfect clarity, can feel her hands coated in fresh blood… She wants to rip those understanding eyes right out of their sockets. She wants to tear her nails down that beautiful face. She wants to scream into that thick pillow of brown hair. She wants to –
How does Amanda always know?
She pulls Sophie back now just as she starts to take a step forward.
Amanda holds Sophie carefully. She holds Sophie’s back tight up against her own chest, keeps her arms wrapped firmly around Sophie’s, locked to her sides. Tucks her head into Sophie’s hair, buried into Sophie’s neck, her words, breath branding across Sophie’s skin:
What Sophie longs to beg of her father now. Just that one word. Just that truth. Plea.
Sophie feels her bones melting; her body sinks until the only thing holding her up is Amanda, Amanda with the calm strength of the entire ocean. Sophie realizes, as they stand together, the longer they wait in this cocoon of silence… They begin to breathe as one, their bodies shifting, falling into movement as a single entity. She is no longer Sophie. Together they aren’t human. They aren’t bodies at all. Aren’t corporeal.
Together they become simply… sadness.
Others in the room come and go, come and go. But Sophie pays them no mind.
What do they matter?
There is no Sophie. No Amanda. No Papa.
She is simply…
There is no she.
There is no one.
They are sadness. And silence. And dark.
Sophie welcomes the dark.
Is the dark.
